The Newbie’s Guide to Studying in Sydney Part 2

Previously, we’ve discussed about two very important things you should look into after your student visa in Australia has been granted. Before leaving your home country, it is best to arrange for your temporary accommodation during your first few days or weeks in Sydney as an international student. Another thing is, making sure you are protected financially during your stay here by opening up an account with one or some of the most trusted banks in Australia.

Now, we’re going to give you tips on two other concerns, international students in Sydney should be mindful about: Finding part-time work and dealing with loneliness and homesickness.

Battling homesickness

Living alone in a foreign country and being away from your friends and family back home can be a bit overwhelming for some students. If you find yourself homesick and feeling terribly alone, know that there will always be someone you can talk to. Many schools and universities and schools have hotlines or crisis centers where students, particularly new ones, are counselled and given a sounding board. You may also want to join in some school sponsored clubs or groups where you can meet many new friends from all over the world. Who knows, you might even meet some people or two who may be from the same place as you.

Finding a job

International students are normally allowed to work part-time or 40 hours every fortnight by the immigration. This is a wonderful privilege because it allows students to legally work part-time in Australia while studying. There are many industries who accept international students as part-time workers, such as in the service and hospitality industry. Being a working student is again, another great opportunity to meet new people and increase your network. Working part-time also enhances relevant skills you need after you graduate from uni and are eligible to work full-time in the field that you have chosen.

Final thoughts

As you go through this very exciting moment in your life, just always remember to enjoy it. No matter how many challenges you go through, it’s always best to enjoy every single moment of it.
